The Medieval West

The Medieval West has some very unique central themes. This area at this time was God-centred, Church-centred, authority-centred and otherworldly. The average peasant lived a very simple, extremely difficult life, which resulted in a focus on the more pleasant afterlife. The central themes of the Medieval West are reflected in their art, music, literature and philosophy. Another recurring theme of the Medieval West is originality, where the different disciplines of the day went back to their origins.

A look at the Medieval West is not complete without taking into account a huge even at the end of the period – the Black plague. One third of the population of Europe died at this time from three different incurable plagues. Obviously this tragedy had a huge effect on the people of the area, and brought into question the western medieval paradigm.
