Western Music
Music, like all other disciplines in Medieval Europe, focused on one main function, glorifying God. To Boethius, and much of this area,
music was a science and something essential to any well-rounded education. Pope Gregory was the main influence on the music of the Medieval West. Because of the God-centred nature of life at this time, music was slow to advance. Although music was slow to advance, there were in fact some developments. Secular music of the time was mostly song and dealt with everyday life, much like China’s music.
