Boethius on "Music":

Boethius said that there are three types of music, each one lower than the one before. These were:

Musica Mundana: the heavenly bodies are harmonious. This is the music of the spheres.

Musica Humana: the harmonious relations within the body and soul of man.

Musica Instrumentalis: the rhythms, modes, melodies and mixtures of all things.

Boethius wrote seven books on this subject. Six of the books were dedicated to the first two types of music, and only one spoke of the third, lowest kind of music.
