Chinese Music

Taoists and Confucians regarded music as a spiritual discipline. The focus of music, as with philosophy, was on harmony. Specifically, the harmony to be found in music was a unity of body and spirit and of breath and sound. The theme of the music reflected their secular ethic in that it was about everyday life (this everyday life focus was also found in Medieval Western secular music). Conversely, India’s music was strictly a spiritual discipline. There are a number of specific, unique characteristics to Chinese music.
