Medieval Art
Art’s sole purpose was to glorify God. Individual artists did not matter since the focus was on God, so credit went to guilds instead. Much of the art for church use was very opulent and highly decorative. The
books of the time are an excellent example. Medieval art reflected the disregard for this life in favour of a heavenly life. The style of painting is yet another manifestation of Medieval philosophy. In this art we also find a recurring theme of ascension. In the architecture of the Medieval cathedral we find two main styles
Romanesque and Gothic. Stained glass windows are unique to the Medieval world and emphasise the heavenly focus of Medieval thought.
