In the Medieval West books were a luxury item. Books were hand copied and illuminated with colourful drawings and gold leaf. The illuminations were very carefully done so that there could be no misinterpretation, similar to the literature of the day. They would even go so far as to label the figures to ensure no misinterpretation. The covers of books were also opulent. They were usually metal with jewelled inlay and gold leaf.
